We loved this collaboration so much last time they did it and we are so excited to see it back again.
This summer, sculpture goes underground at Clearwell Caves for the second time with this exciting exhibition, in collaboration with Gallery Pangolin, of modern and contemporary sculpture, curated by Rungwe Kingdon and Claude Koenig. Taking its theme of colour from the ochre mined at the caves since Neolithic times, it will features 70 works by 60 British and international modern and contemporary artists.
A journey through colour, form and materials in an exhibition of Modern and contemporary sculpture, inspired by 5,000 years of colour mining at Clearwell Caves.
The artists on show, include Antony Gormley, Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst and Maggi Hambling. The pieces transition from monochrome black and white, through earth colours, primaries and metallic tones into dazzling technicolour. 16 of the pieces were created especially for the exhibition, several have never been shown before, and some will not be seen again.
Visitors to the exhibition will follow a planned route – 550 metres long and up to 100ft below ground – where they will encounter sculptures, including several new site-specific works, and have a chance to explore the mine.
Entry to the exhibition is included in your ‘Cave Entry‘ ticket purchased for dates running from 23 May to 31 August 2025.
The exhibition runs until 31 August 2025. (Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.) Children £10, Adults £12.50. Under 4s are free. Family and concession tickets available.
